Albert Einstein: The Human Side And Mind Without Fear

Today we bring to you, two totally different but interesting reads. The first one is a reply by Albert Einstein, to a letter from an unemployed professional musician (5 April 1933), as quoted in the book "Albert Einstein, The Human Side".

"Early in 1933, Einstein received a letter from a professional musician who presumably lived in Munich. The musician was evidently troubled and despondent, and out of a job, yet at the same time, he must have been something of a kindred spirit.

Of the countless frolicking children competing for my (the photographer's) attention, these two are just those whom you could not refuse. They may have little in life but are rich in energy and hope. Pure in spirit and boundless with charm, they appreciate their beach like no other. The children of Ramena Beach, the Emerald Sea, Antsiranana (Diego Suarez), NE Madagascar.

"Children aren't coloring books. You don't get to fill them with your favorite colors."

His letter is lost, all that survives being Einstein's reply."

1. Einstein's reply.....

"I am the one to whom you wrote in care of the Belgian Academy......

Read no newspapers, try to find a few friends who think as you do, read the wonderful writers of earlier times, Kant, Goethe, Lessing, and the classics of other lands, and enjoy the natural beauties of Munich's surroundings.

Make believe all the time that you are living, so to speak, on Mars among alien creatures and blot out any deeper interest in the actions of those creatures.
Make friends with a few animals. Then you will become a cheerful man once more and nothing will be able to trouble you.

Bear in mind that those who are finer and nobler are always alone — and necessarily so — and that because of this they can enjoy the purity of their own atmosphere. I shake your hand in heartfelt comradeship, E."

Our second interesting read for today, is a beautiful short poem called "Mind Without Fear" by Nobel Laureate (1913) Rabindranath Tagore, taken from the book "Gitanjali - Song Offerings".

WHERE THE MIND IS WITHOUT FEAR

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee
Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.

------ Rabindranath Tagore
